Community Hope Initiative donates Solar irrigation Pumps at Mpamba EPA

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, Community Hope Initiative donated two solar irrigation pumps to farmers in Mpamba EPA, Nkhatabay district. These two pumps are part of a total of six, four of which had already been handed over to other beneficiaries earlier in the year. The donation is part of an ongoing effort to promote sustainable farming practices and improve agricultural productivity in the area.
Representing the Nkhatabay Agriculture Office, Mr. Kenneth Msukwa expressed deep appreciation for the timely support provided by Community Hope Initiative. He highlighted the urgent need for improved irrigation systems, as many farms have been drying up due to insufficient access to water. Most farmers in the area still rely on watering cans, which are inadequate for large-scale irrigation. With the new solar pumps, farmers now have the means to water their crops more efficiently and consistently
Speaking on behalf of his peers, Trywel Munthali expressed his joy and gratitude upon receiving the pumps. “This will go a long way in helping us irrigate our crops so that we can have a bumper yield. We have struggled with dry spells for too long, and this support brings us hope for a better future,” he said.

This pilot project, generously funded by Stitching Afrika and Wild Ganzen, is expected to benefit around 300 farmers in Mpamba EPA. The solar pumps will empower local farmers to cultivate more crops during both the rainy and dry seasons, leading to improved food security and income generation in the community.

However, the need for more irrigation facilities is still significant. Many farmers in the region continue to face challenges due to the dry spells, which have severely affected their crops. The provision of more solar pumps and other irrigation equipment is critical to ensure that all farmers have the tools they need to maintain their livelihoods and contribute to the local food supply.

To expand the impact of this initiative and support more farmers, additional funding is essential. We appeal to our current donors and other potential partners to consider extending their support to address the urgent irrigation needs in the area. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of these hardworking farmers and help them overcome the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity.
Although farmers in Mpamba EPA are fortunate to have abundant water sources, particularly rivers, they face a significant challenge: they lack the necessary resources to transport this water to their crops. While access to water is not an issue, the tools and equipment to make effective use of it are scarce. Most farmers rely on basic watering cans, which are time-consuming and insufficient for covering larger areas of farmland. This has led to a decline in crop yields, especially during the dry season, when efficient irrigation is critical.

The solar Irrigation pumps donated by Community Hope Initiative are a game-changer for the farmers, enabling them to access and distribute water from nearby rivers to their fields. This technology not only saves time and labor but also ensures that crops receive adequate water to thrive, even in times of drought.

However, the demand for more irrigation resources remains high. With the region’s vast water sources, it is crucial to equip more farmers with the necessary tools to tap into these rivers and irrigate their crops effectively. Expanding the availability of solar pumps and other irrigation technologies could unlock the full agricultural potential of Mpamba EPA, leading to better food security and improved livelihoods for the entire community.

In light of this, we appeal for additional support to provide more irrigation facilities to the farmers in need. By investing in sustainable irrigation solutions, we can help these farmers fully utilize their natural water resources and ensure a brighter future for their families and communities.

Report on the Donation of Solar Irrigation Pumps at Mpamba EPA

Report on the Donation of Solar Irrigation Pumps at Mpamba EPA, Traditional Authority Timbiri, Nkhatabay District
Dates: 29th July 2024 and 1st August 2024
Location: Mpamba EPA and GVH Goneka, Traditional Authority Timbiri, Nkhatabay District

Introduction
Community Hope Initiative has embarked on a new pilot phase project aimed at enhancing winter farming activities through the provision of solar irrigation pumps. This initiative addresses the pressing environmental concerns posed by charcoal burning and aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Background

In Mpamba EPA, under the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Timbiri in Nkhatabay District, many community members engage in charcoal burning due to the lack of essential agricultural resources. This activity significantly contributes to deforestation and environmental degradation. Despite having ample land and water resources, farmers have been unable to maximize their agricultural potential, leading to their involvement in environmentally harmful practices.
Donation Events
Mpamba EPA:
On 29th July 2024, Community Hope Initiative donated three solar irrigation pumps to 70 farmers from two Group Village Headmen, Chigwiti and Kantambo. This initiative marks a significant step toward shifting the community’s focus from charcoal burning to sustainable winter farming.
GVH Goneka:
A similar activity took place on 1st August 2024 at GVH Goneka in the same traditional authority. One solar pump was handed over to Chisomo club, which has 25 farmers as members. The farmers initiated the purchase of a 120-meter horse pipe for watering their maize fields. The recipients expressed joy for the timely donation of the solar irrigation pump, as their maize fields had started drying due to a lack of water.

Importance of the Donation

1. Environmental Conservation:
The provision of solar irrigation pumps is a critical measure in combating deforestation and promoting environmental conservation. By reducing the community’s dependence on charcoal burning, the initiative helps preserve local forests and maintain ecological balance.
2. Enhancing Food Security:
With the new solar irrigation pumps, farmers can now efficiently utilize their land and water resources to cultivate crops throughout the year. This is expected to significantly boost agricultural productivity, ensuring a stable food supply and enhancing food security in the area.
3. Sustainable Agriculture:
The use of solar-powered irrigation systems represents a shift towards sustainable agricultural practices. These pumps are environmentally friendly and provide a reliable water supply for irrigation, enabling farmers to grow a variety of crops even during dry seasons.
4. Economic Empowerment:
By enabling year-round farming, the solar pumps help increase farmers’ incomes and improve their livelihoods. This economic empowerment is crucial for the overall development of the community and the reduction of poverty levels.

Community Response

Group Village Headmen Chigwiti and Kantambo expressed immense gratitude to Community Hope Initiative for the timely donation. They highlighted that the availability of solar irrigation pumps would significantly reduce the community’s reliance on charcoal burning, fostering a healthier environment and promoting agricultural development. The Headmen emphasized that this initiative would lead to better land utilization and a more stable food supply, ultimately transforming the livelihoods of the farmers involved.
The farmers in both Mpamba EPA and GVH Goneka expressed joy upon receiving the solar pumps, noting that they came at a critical time when their crops were beginning to dry due to a lack of water. “Given three weeks using these solar pumps, our crops will be saved from the dry spell,” one farmer said, underscoring the immediate positive impact of the donation.

Future Plans
Out of the six solar pumps allocated for this pilot phase, four have been donated to the farmers in Mpamba EPA and GVH Goneka. The remaining two pumps will be donated to other identified areas with the assistance of the Agricultural Extension Worker for the area. This phased approach ensures that the benefits of solar irrigation are extended to more farmers, further promoting sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation.

Conclusion

The donation of solar irrigation pumps by Community Hope Initiative marks a pivotal moment for the farmers of Mpamba EPA and GVH Goneka. This project not only addresses immediate environmental concerns but also lays the foundation for sustainable agricultural practices and long-term food security. As the farmers begin to shift their focus from harmful charcoal burning to productive winter farming, the positive impact on both the environment and the community’s well-being will become increasingly evident.
Community Hope Initiative remains committed to supporting these farmers and monitoring the progress of this pilot project, with the hope of expanding it to other areas in the future.
Community Hope Initiative is also grateful to Stitching Afrika Zwolle and Wilde Ganzen for the financial support towards the purchasing of these durable and strong solar pumps.
