Bumper Harvest from Solar powered irrigation at Mpamba EPA

Success Story: Bumper Harvests from Solar-Powered Irrigation – A Pilot Project in Mpamba EPA, Nkhata Bay

As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance food security through sustainable farming practices, Community Hope Initiative (CHI) successfully implemented a pilot phase of solar-powered irrigation in Mpamba EPA, Nkhata Bay district. In collaboration with Stitching Afrika and Wilde Ganzen, CHI donated six solar irrigation pumps to local farmers, enabling them to irrigate their maize fields and ensure year-round crop production, even during the dry season.

Today, the results of this initiative are evident. During a recent field visit by Mpamba EPA staff, the beneficiaries proudly showcased their bountiful maize harvests, a testament to the transformative impact of solar irrigation. The fields, once dependent on erratic rainfall and manual watering, have been transformed into thriving, green landscapes producing bumper yields of maize.

One farmer shared his excitement:

“We never imagined this kind of harvest was possible during the dry season. The solar pumps have been a blessing, allowing us to irrigate our fields without the back-breaking labor of using watering cans. Now, our families have enough food, and we are even considering selling some of the maize to generate income.”

These solar pumps have enabled farmers to move away from traditional subsistence farming methods, which often left families vulnerable to food shortages. The pumps have ensured that water is readily available, making it possible for farmers to grow maize consistently throughout the year. The maize harvested so far is just the beginning, with more fields still to be harvested in the coming weeks.

The project has not only improved food security for the farmers involved but has also inspired other community members to explore new farming methods. The success of the pilot phase provides a strong foundation for scaling up the initiative and helping more farmers benefit from solar irrigation in the future.

CHI is grateful for the support from Stitching Afrika and Wilde Ganzen, whose generous contributions made this project possible. The bumper harvests serve as a powerful example of how solar-powered irrigation can revolutionize farming, ensuring that rural communities become more resilient in the face of climate change and droughts.

As we celebrate these successes, we look forward to expanding the project to reach more farmers in Mpamba EPA and beyond. This initiative stands as a shining example of how innovative solutions can transform lives and communities, ensuring food security for all.

This success story is a true reflection of what community-driven projects, combined with innovation and donor support, can achieve. With continued partnership, we are confident that even greater achievements lie ahead for the farmers of Mpamba EPA.

Community Hope Initiative, a beacon of Hope in Community Empowerment

Transforming Lives through Winter Farming in Mzimba District

In 2020, Community Hope Initiative (CHI) was established with a mission to uplift communities through innovative and impactful projects. Over the past four years, CHI has implemented three core programs: the Self Help Groups (SHG) Approach, Youth Vocational Trainings, and Winter Farming. These initiatives have significantly improved the livelihoods of beneficiaries and their communities.

One such success story is that of Mr. Kasambara Gumbo, a lead farmer in the Kavula area under Enukweni Traditional Authority Mtwalo, Mzimba district. Through CHI’s winter farming project, Mr. Gumbo has transformed his farming practices and now manages 3 acres of green maize. This year, he is set to harvest more than 50 bags of maize, a staple that will provide essential food security for his family and the community.

However, Mr. Gumbo’s success goes beyond maize. CHI has consistently encouraged farmers to diversify their crops for nutritional and economic benefits. Taking this advice to heart, Mr. Gumbo has planted beans, cabbages, and other green vegetables alongside his maize. Most notably, he has cultivated 20,000 tomato plants, which are thriving. He expects a minimum return of 30 million kwacha from the sale of his tomatoes, a figure that could surpass previous years’ earnings due to the remarkable growth and quality of the produce.

In his own words, Mr. Gumbo expressed deep gratitude to Community Hope Initiative for the life-changing projects it has introduced to his community. “These projects have brought a huge impact on our lives,” he said. He highlighted the significance of all three initiatives—SHGs, vocational training, and winter farming—saying that they have empowered individuals and strengthened community resilience. With a heartfelt plea, he urged CHI to continue its mission, as it is leaving an indelible mark on the lives of many.

Mr. Gumbo’s story is just one of many that demonstrate the tangible and lasting benefits of CHI’s interventions. As the organization looks to the future, the successes of farmers like Mr. Gumbo underscore the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the potential for continued growth and transformation in the communities CHI serves.

Community Hope Initiative in Food Security Project

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, Community Hope Initiative donated two solar irrigation pumps to farmers in Mpamba EPA, Nkhatabay district. These two pumps are part of a total of six, four of which had already been handed over to other beneficiaries earlier in the year. The donation is part of an ongoing effort to promote sustainable farming practices and improve agricultural productivity in the area.
Representing the Nkhatabay Agriculture Office, Mr. Kenneth Msukwa expressed deep appreciation for the timely support provided by Community Hope Initiative. He highlighted the urgent need for improved irrigation systems, as many farms have been drying up due to insufficient access to water. Most farmers in the area still rely on watering cans, which are inadequate for large-scale irrigation. With the new solar pumps, farmers now have the means to water their crops more efficiently and consistently
Speaking on behalf of his peers, Trywel Munthali expressed his joy and gratitude upon receiving the pumps. “This will go a long way in helping us irrigate our crops so that we can have a bumper yield. We have struggled with dry spells for too long, and this support brings us hope for a better future,” he said.

This pilot project, generously funded by Stitching Afrika and Wild Ganzen, is expected to benefit around 300 farmers in Mpamba EPA. The solar pumps will empower local farmers to cultivate more crops during both the rainy and dry seasons, leading to improved food security and income generation in the community.

However, the need for more irrigation facilities is still significant. Many farmers in the region continue to face challenges due to the dry spells, which have severely affected their crops. The provision of more solar pumps and other irrigation equipment is critical to ensure that all farmers have the tools they need to maintain their livelihoods and contribute to the local food supply.

To expand the impact of this initiative and support more farmers, additional funding is essential. We appeal to our current donors and other potential partners to consider extending their support to address the urgent irrigation needs in the area. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of these hardworking farmers and help them overcome the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity.
Although farmers in Mpamba EPA are fortunate to have abundant water sources, particularly rivers, they face a significant challenge: they lack the necessary resources to transport this water to their crops. While access to water is not an issue, the tools and equipment to make effective use of it are scarce. Most farmers rely on basic watering cans, which are time-consuming and insufficient for covering larger areas of farmland. This has led to a decline in crop yields, especially during the dry season, when efficient irrigation is critical.

The solar Irrigation pumps donated by Community Hope Initiative are a game-changer for the farmers, enabling them to access and distribute water from nearby rivers to their fields. This technology not only saves time and labor but also ensures that crops receive adequate water to thrive, even in times of drought.

However, the demand for more irrigation resources remains high. With the region’s vast water sources, it is crucial to equip more farmers with the necessary tools to tap into these rivers and irrigate their crops effectively. Expanding the availability of solar pumps and other irrigation technologies could unlock the full agricultural potential of Mpamba EPA, leading to better food security and improved livelihoods for the entire community.

In light of this, we appeal for additional support to provide more irrigation facilities to the farmers in need. By investing in sustainable irrigation solutions, we can help these farmers fully utilize their natural water resources and ensure a brighter future for their families and communities.

Youth Empowerment

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT THROUGH BRICK LAYING

In June 2024, with generous support from Stitching Afrika Foundation and Wilde Ganzen from the Netherlands, Community Hope Initiative embarked on an impactful youth vocational training project in Traditional Authority Kalolo, Lilongwe. The initiative, aimed at empowering vulnerable youths through bricklaying skills, selected 25 young people—17 males and 8 females—after a thorough assessment of their socio-economic backgrounds.

Over the four-month period, from June to September, these youths were not only trained but also took part in various practical projects within their community. They successfully constructed a dwelling house for one individual, built 10 school toilets, and a teachers’ house, demonstrating their growing expertise in bricklaying.

The story of success does not end there. Upon completion of their training, the youths have been employed by a Chinese construction company working on a warehouse project. Each trainee is now earning K4500 per day, a significant step towards self-sufficiency. The daily wages they receive have transformed their lives, allowing them to meet their basic needs and support their families. From struggling to make ends meet, they now have stable income sources, helping them buy food, pay for household necessities, and even invest in their futures.

This vocational training project, powered by Stitching Afrika Foundation and Wilde Ganzen, has not only provided these youths with bricklaying skills but has also opened doors to employment opportunities that are lifting them out of poverty. The impact of this training is already visible in their communities, as they contribute to construction projects and become valuable members of the workforce.

The partnership between Community Hope Initiative and its esteemed sponsors has sparked hope and created a ripple effect of positive change. The skills these youths have gained will continue to empower them, their families, and their communities for years to come.

Future Projects: Expanding Opportunities for Youth Empowerment

Building on the success of the bricklaying vocational training, Community Hope Initiative is already planning future projects to further empower vulnerable youths in Lilongwe and beyond. With continued support from Stitching Afrika Foundation and Wilde Ganzen, the organization aims to expand its vocational training programs to include other practical skills such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. These trades will provide additional employment opportunities for young people, diversifying their skill sets and enhancing their employability.

Another upcoming project (tailoring training) focuses on entrepreneurship and small business development. The initiative plans to provide training and certificates to the youth graduates. This will not only provide them with skills but also create job opportunities where individuals and companies can employ them and become self reliant.

In collaboration with local companies and government agencies e.g TEVETA Community Hope Initiative also envisions offering advanced certifications and apprenticeships, ensuring that youths can access long-term career.

Empowering Youths Through Vocational Training

In the areas of T/A Kalolo in Lilongwe and T/A Mtwalo in Mzimba, a transformative initiative led by Community Hope Initiative is changing lives. In April and May this year, the organization embarked on vocational training projects aimed at empowering local youth, a group often overlooked in development efforts.
In Lilongwe’s T/A Kalolo, the vocational training focuses on two main areas: bricklaying at Chibungo and tailoring at Mkoko Trading Center. Upon visiting the project sites, the Director of Community Hope, Mapulanga Francisco Vitsitsi, witnessed firsthand the impact of the organization’s efforts.Nine young women and sixteen young men, the beneficiaries of the bricklaying training, expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to participate. Speaking on behalf of his peers, the Chairperson highlighted how the project is not just equipping them with essential skills but also serving as a shield against societal challenges such as substance abuse, early pregnancies, and broken marriages.
The ethusiasim was palpable among both the beneficiaries and the community leaders. The Chairperson of the School Development Committee commended the initiative for addressing longstanding community needs, noting that such opportunities had been scarce in the past.
As if this was not enough, the School Development Committee has also engaged these youths to construct 10 toilets at a primary school which has over 3000 learners. This remarkable contribution demonstrates how the vocational training has empowered the youths to give back to the community using their newly acquired skills.
The school would have spent a considerable amount of money if it had engaged hired bricklayers who charge high fees for such work. However, these youths have volunteered to showcase their skills, proving to the community that they are capable of delivering quality work. This act also serves as a marketing strategy to attract potential clients with construction projects, ensuring the youths can secure immediate employment opportunities.
At Mkoko Trading Center, 25 youths are being trained in fashion and design. This year alone, Community Hope Initiative has managed to train 68 youths across these fields, with 41 males and 27 females participating.
In Mzimba’s T/A Mtwalo, 18 youths have just graduated from tailoring training at Enukweni. This milestone marks significant progress in the initiative’s efforts to empower youth through vocational skills, providing them with opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods.
On behalf of the Lilongwe District Youth Office, the District Youth Officer himself visited the two project sites in Lilongwe, Mkoko and Chibungo, to see for himself the work being done by the youths. He expressed great satisfaction and promised more support from his office, acknowledging that this initiative helps alleviate the government’s burden in empowering the youth. The District Youth Officer also affirmed the government’s readiness to continue working with Community Hope Initiative on all its projects, citing the organization’s transparency, accountability, dedication, and commitment to achieving its objectives.
During the visit, the youths were actively engaged in construction and tailoring work, demonstrating their newly acquired skills by building a house for a community member. The homeowner, filled with awe, remarked that the youths’ capabilities exceeded expectations after only a month of training.
The success of the vocational training projects extends beyond skill development; they symbolize a ray of hope for the entire community. With each brick laid and each lesson learned, these youths are not just building structures but also forging brighter futures for themselves and their families. Community Hope Initiative continues to be a catalyst for change, empowering youth and fostering resilient, thriving communities in Lilongwe and Mzimba.
Community Hope Initiative remains grateful to Stitching Afrika Zwolle, Wilde Ganzen and Living Way Foundation for the financial and material support towards these projects!
